Moto Guzzi Breva 750 Fork Oil Change

The Breva's front forks are similar to the Stones. They have to be removed to change their oil. I started at 10.10am and had the forks out by 11.10am.

In order to reach the pinch-bolts on the top triple-tree, I had to remove the instrument binnacle.
Begin by removing the windscreen which means removing the headlight. The wiring harness connection is just behind the light.

The bolts I want access to are just behind the speedo and tacho.

You'll need to remove the piece of plastic trim which sits around the key lock and covers two screws. Gently lever the plastic plugs out with a screw driver.

Remove this nut...

....then these two screws. If you find the rubber mounting blocks start turning, hold them with a pair of pliers.

I then lifted the binnacle up out of the way...

....and tied it with a piece of baling twine (thank God I'm a country boy).

This allowed access to the pinch-bolts.

Loosen the top bolts but not the lower ones. Then loosen the top fork caps. Its easier to do this now rather than when the forks are out.

Remove the wheel and the brake calliper. (Hang the calliper out of the way with string or wire so its not dangling from its hose.)

Now undo the lower pinch bolts.

I found that I had to initially tap the forks out with a hammer and piece of wood and occasionally gently lever the clamps open with a broad-bladed screw driver.
The front fender and its metal brace can be removed at this stage.

Not a good pic, but the point is the oil is a dirty grey and only 300ml came out. The manual calls for 400ml, so where the other 100ml got to beats me. I rinsed the forks out with kerosene and let them drain for an hour.

While I waited for them to drain I polished the triple-tree holes to make reassembly smoother.

I poured in 400ml of fork oil, tightened the fork caps as much as I could - everything was fairly greasy by now, and reassembled the bike.

The trickiest bit was reattaching the fender. You need to treat the fender and metal cross-brace as one unit, insert a couple of bolts loosely then insert the fork legs into the triple tree.

I again had to tap them up and judiciously pry the clamps with a screw driver. Tighten the lower bolts, tighten the fork caps, then tighten the upper pinch-bolts. Reassemble everything else.

It took me an hour and twenty minutes to put everything back together - figuring out how to put the front fender together wasted some time. By 01.30pm I was fanging down the road on a test run. Sweeet.
